Creating a specific mission statement for a nonprofit board is an important way to help members maintain a strong vision of their key responsibilities. Even if the nonprofit organization has its own mission statement, don’t overlook the importance of having a separate mission statement for the board.

Suggested Nonprofit Board Mission Statement

A board needs a mission statement that is motivating, inspiring and that focuses on the two primary responsibilities of the board: ensuring financial resources and expanding public recognition. You might consider this suggested board mission statement:

The board’s mission is to ensure the long-term ability of this organization to provide best-in-class (education, services, art, music, etc.) by focusing on long-term funding sources and by enhancing public recognition. This requires us to position the organization strategically to best respond to the critical needs of (students, patrons, clients, patients, children, etc.).

As with all mission statements, it should be:

  • Clear
  • Concise
  • Compelling

Avoid language that is confusing or generic. The statement should be to-the-point and easy to understand. Too often, mission statements attempt to describe everything the organization does.

Implementing a Board Mission Statement

Not only do you need to consider the language in the mission statement, but it’s also important to be proactive with its implementation. Since the mission statement is clear and concise, it should be easy for most board members to have it memorized. Knowing the mission statement from memory can instill the message and ensure that the clear focus remains in the right place.

Board member training can help ensure that all members understand the mission. A clear understanding of the mission enables members to communicate the message to others, which is essential for fundraising and outside support.

When new board members join the team, provide a copy of the mission statement in the onboarding packet. Not only should they receive a printed copy, but make it compelling with attractive formatting and quality paper to make it visually appealing.
